Richard Francis English bio
New Zealand composer and sound artist Richard Francis (aka Eso Steel) has been involved with experimental music since 1996 when he began his first solo excursions (combining tape looped instrumentation and field recordings) and played in a guitar improvisation group called Small Blue Torch along with Campbell Kneale (Birchville Cat Motel). His sound making since then has explored different techniques of manipulation, with a focus on the collection (with contact and condenser microphones) and digital processing of various natural and artificially produced sounds. He has released sound works on labels such as Last Visible Dog, USA; Drone Records, Germany; Stateart, Germany; Absurd, Greece, with numerous releases on his own labels 20city and CMR. He has collaborated for recording and/or performance with Gate (NZ), Mattin (Basque Country), Birchville Cat Motel (NZ), MSBR (Japan), Empirical (NZ), Tetuzi Akiyama (Japan), Greg Headley (USA), Pumice (NZ), Doe (NZ), Howard Stelzer (USA), Kuwayama Kiyoharu (Japan), Phil Dadson (NZ), Joel Stern (Australia), Bruce Russell (NZ), Sean Kerr (NZ), Rosy Parlane (NZ), Andrew Clifford (NZ), Anthony Guerra (Australia), Sean Meehan (USA), Antony Milton (NZ), James Kirk (NZ).
